Ion Storage Systems |
Ion Storage Systems, a Maryland-based manufacturer, has been awarded a $20 million federal grant this week to accelerate the commercialization of its solid-state lithium battery for the electric vehicle market.
The grant, provided by the US Department of Energy, will aid Ion in developing nonflammable batteries utilizing ceramic electrolyte manufacturing. According to the Department of Energy, this method has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from battery production by 50%.
Ion is collaborating on this four-year, $40 million project with Saint-Gobain, a supplier of ceramics and glass, and KLA, a manufacturer of chip-making tools.
Furthermore, Ion announced it is working with government agencies to expand the applications of its solid-state battery technology in the defense and aerospace sectors.
