Indonesia-based mining firm Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMNT) has secured an export permit for a copper concentrate export quota of 534,000t, valid until the end of this year.
The granting of the export license indicates that the progress of the Amman copper smelter project is on track with the government's target, the company stated. This permit allows AMNT to resume exporting copper concentrate and continue various expansion projects to support its smelter, according to the company's president director, Rachmat Makkasau.
The Amman copper smelter project entered the commissioning stage on May 31, and progress is now 95.5% complete.
The smelter has a total feedstock requirement of up to 900,000 t/yr of concentrate sourced from the Indonesia-based Batu Hijau mine and the developing Elang mine. The smelter will produce about 200,000 t/yr of copper cathode, with first production expected in the fourth quarter of this year.
Additionally, the smelter is expected to produce approximately 18 t/yr of gold, 55 t/yr of silver, and 830,000 t/yr of sulfuric acid.
In June last year, Indonesian president Joko Widodo announced that the country will no longer export copper concentrates to promote the domestic processing of raw materials. However, Amman has been granted an exemption until its smelter starts producing commercial products.
