Steady Hafnium Exports from China Despite Production Disruptions

China's hafnium exports from January-August 2024 stayed steady despite production cuts and international price declines.

China's hafnium exports, including unwrought metal, scrap, and powder, remained largely stable from January to August 2024. According to customs data, the country exported 15,887kg during this period, closely matching last year's 15,759kg. However, the August 2024 exports of 1,744kg marked a 6.3% drop from August 2023 but represented an 89% increase from July 2024.

Exports to China’s top two destinations, the US and the UK, accounted for 62% of total shipments. These reached 9,907kg, a 6.6% rise compared to the same period in 2023. However, export volumes fluctuated, with significant declines in April and July due to environmental inspections and equipment maintenance, particularly at a Baoji-based producer responsible for hafnium separation from zirconium.

Market Impact and Price Trends

Following production disruptions and reduced international demand, China's hafnium prices have faced a downward trend since late August. Prices for 99.95% grade hafnium crystal bars dropped to 17,500-18,000 yuan/kg ($2,492-2,564/kg) by mid-September. Export prices have similarly declined, and Chinese exporters are considering further price concessions for the remainder of 2024 and early 2025 to maintain competitiveness in the weakening international market.
