Italian EV

Registrations of new fully electric vehicles (EVs) in Italy experienced a nearly 13% decline in 2024.  According to Anfia, the Italian automobile industry association, EV registrations fell to 117,412 units from 134,751 in 2023.

This resulted in a decrease in the EV market share, dropping to 7.5% of total car registrations, down 1.1 percentage points from the previous year.  Sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) also saw a significant decrease, totaling 51,792 units in 2024, a nearly 25% drop year-on-year.  The PHV market share also declined by 1 percentage point to 3.3%.

Hybrid Vehicle Sales Increase

Conversely, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales, including those partially fueled by gasoline, diesel, or LPG, saw an increase.  HEV sales reached 623,665 units, a little over a 10% rise from 566,387 units in 2023.  This growth led to an increase in HEV market share, rising to 40% of total car registrations, up from 36.1% in 2023.

Traditional Fuel Vehicle Sales

Sales of diesel-fueled vehicles experienced a substantial 21.4% decline, falling to 215,294 units.  However, gasoline vehicle sales saw a slight increase of 1.9% year-on-year. Combined registrations of diesel and gasoline vehicles accounted for 43.1% of the Italian automobile market in 2024, a decrease from 46% in 2023.
